LOCATION: The Hughesville Cabin & Acreage is situated in the scenic Little Belt Mountains situated 12 miles southeast of Monarch, Montana and fifty five miles southeast of Great Falls, Montana. Access to this property is via US Highway 89 to Monarch, exiting onto the Hughesville County Road or Forest Service Trail #120.
Highway #89 from Armington Junction south through the Little Belt Mountains to White Sulphur Springs, has been designated as the Kings Hill Scenic Byway. This is not a super highway, but a road that is off the beaten track. This Byway passes through the Lewis and Clark National Forest Service of the Little Belt Mountains. Stretching 71 miles along Highway 89, the Byway winds its way through the wide-open spaces of central Montana and spectacular mountain scenery. LOCALE: The town site of Hughesville was an old mining town that sprang up in the 1880's. Silver and lead was the primary mineral mined. The Great Northern Railroad built a branch line from Great Falls to Hughesville and Neihart in 1890 to ship ore to the Great Falls Smelter.
Great falls is Montana's third largest city, located on the Missouri River among the five falls that were both a magnificent spectacle and formidable barrier to early river travel. This area held great significance for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The explorers were forced to spend nearly a month portaging around the falls in June 1805. Great Falls is situated in Central Montana between Glacier and Yellowstone Nation Parks. Glacier National Park is a short 170 miles from Great Falls to Saint Mary's Lake, the east entrance of the Going to the Sun Road. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The subject property comprises 12.93 acres and is known as the Silver Lode, Mineral Survey Lode #3047 in the Barker-Hughesville Mining District, Judith Basin County. Patented in August 1890. The Silver Lode is in the heart of thousands of acres of public land of the Lewis and Clark National Forest Service offering unlimited recreational opportunities and having access to thousands of acres of some of Montana's pristine National Forest Service Land. This acreage is approximately 70% timbered, predominately with Douglas Fir. The remaining acreage is open grassy parks. Part of the northern boundary borders the Lewis and Clark National Forest Service Boundary. Galena Creek Flows through the property for its entire length, or 1300 feet.
The Silver Lode supports a very good spring that has been developed for domestic water for the cabin situated upon this acreage.
The Barker-Hughesville Mining District has been designated by the EPA as a Super Fund Cleanup site due to the past mining in the area in 2001. Reclamation work has been ongoing cleaning up mining contamination to Galena Creek and mine tailing that are leaching into Galena Creek. In 2017 reclamation work was started at the Block P Mine Site to reconstruct Galena Creek as it flows through the Hughesville Baker Mining District. Since being designated as a Super Fund Site and the remediation work that has been done since, the water quality of Galena Creek and unnamed tributaries has improved significantly. With each year passing and the remediation work that is planned for the future of this area, the quality of the area will continue to keep improving. Eventually Galena Creek will have its own native fishery of Cutthroat Trout and Brook Trout.
IMPROVEMENTS: The cabin situated on this acreage is a 1983 Gallatin, Cimarron Manufactured Home 16 X 56 feet. This single wide Manufactured Home has 896 square feet with two bedrooms, one full bath, living room, kitchen and laundry area. All found to be in good condition. Heated with wood heat and propane forced air heat for backup.
Water is via a developed spring and cistern. The cabin has a septic tank and drain field plus a separate septic line for clothes washer.
The cabin has a newer sloped metal roof and patio overhang. The Manufactured Home is not on a permanent foundation, but skirted.
This cabin is serviced via county road that is plowed in the winter, power, alarm and video security system and cell phone service.
The Hughesville Road splits this acreage running south to north though this acreage. The acreage situated along the east side is approximately one third of the acreage where the cabin is located, along with a tool shed and the developed spring, spring house and cistern.
The remainder two thirds of the acreage is on the west side were Galena Creek flows through this acreage for approximately 1300 feet. Underground 60 amp power source has been brought to this west side and used to power recreational vehicles that are used from time to time on this side. Other buildings include a tool shed and a truck rental box (8 1/2 x 26 ft.) utilized as a garage area. A walking bridge is installed across Galena Creek.
