BELT CREEK CABIN
LOCATION: This Belt Creek Cabin is situated in the scenic Little Belt Mountains and within the Lewis & Clark National Forest Service. Situated off Highway 89 one mile north of Neihart, Montana. Highway #89 from Armington Junction south through the Little Belt Mountains to White Sulphur Springs, has been designated as the Kings Hill Scenic Byway. Neihart, one of a group of prospectors who first discovered minerals in this part of the mountains. The discovery of silver-lead ore came in 1881 and proved to be one of the richest in the Little Belts. Thus the beginning of the town site on Neihart began as a mining town. The Great Northern Railroad built a branch line from Great Falls to Neihart in 1890 so they could ship ore to the Great Falls Smelter. Neihart is an incorporated city and has a population of around 100 residents. Great falls is Montana’s third largest city, located on the Missouri River among the five falls that were both a magnificent spectacle and formidable barrier to early river travel. This area held great significance for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The explorers were forced to spend nearly a month portaging around the falls in June 1805.
