Accessed via paved Highway #89, designated as the Kings Hill Scenic Byway. This is not a super highway, but a road that is off the beaten track. Monarch is an old mining town that sprang up in the 1880's. There were three adjacent mining claims at the time and were known as the “King,” “Czar” and the “Emperor” and this may account for the name of Monarch. Silver and lead was the primary mineral mined.
